Patriot Place - Boston's Hottest Entertainment Destination For Sports, Shopping, and Dining

Where can you and your significant other go for a weekend getaway when one of you loves sports and the other one loves shopping? Patriot Place, Boston's newest entertainment complex, sports venue, and shopping mall all rolled into one, is the solution.

What Will You Find Here?

In addition to including Gillette Stadium, home to the 3-time Super Bowl champions New England Patriots and the New England Revolution soccer team, Patriot Place is also a huge outdoor shopping mall specializing in entertainment retailing. Most shopping malls include "anchor" stores - typically one or more large department stores that attract large numbers of shoppers who then visit the smaller shops and boutiques elsewhere in the mall.

Here, however, the "anchor" formula is unique: in addition to the stadium, you'll find the only Bass Pro Shops in New England anchoring one end of the mall and at the other end an equally weighty anchor, an enormous Showcase Cinema de Lux movie theater flanked by Showcase Live, an entertainment space for musical performances, children's theater, and comedy. In between these three anchors, you'll find smaller stores, shops, restaurants, and pubs. You'll even find "The Hall," a museum dedicated to celebrating and preserving the accomplishments of the Patriots and New England football.

If you love hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and outdoor life, you could easily spend a whole day in the enormous Bass Pro Shops alone. If you get bored with shopping for all of the gear that you could possibly need, no problem--stop by the in-store shooting gallery or settle down by the huge hunting lodge-like fireplace in the store's bar and relax with a drink and some snacks. For a taste of nature, head up to the observation deck and use one of the telescopes to look for wildlife in the complex's adjacent wetlands and woodlands.

Other shopping options include lots of athletic and weekend clothing stores such as Eastern Mountain Sports, Puma, and Old Navy. You'll also find a Bed Bath and Beyond, a Christmas Tree Shop, and, if you want your clothing to communicate your loyalty to the team, a Patriots Pro Shop.

If you have tickets to a game, you can stop off at the stadium as you progress through the mall. Otherwise, you might catch a blockbuster movie in the theater or head for dinner at Skipjack's, Tastings Bar and Bistro, or try some fabulous Northern Italian cuisine at Davio's.

Why Combine a Stadium with a Mall? And What's Next?

By this point, you may be wondering: are you in a stadium that happens to be surrounded by some stores, or are you in a mall that happens to contain a stadium?

The answer is: this didn't just happen! After Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots since 1994, tried first to get funding to build a new stadium in South Boston and when that didn't happen, even entertained an offer to move the team to Connecticut, he decided to use his own money to build the sports and entertainment center of his dreams. And what you see today is just the beginning.

Patriot Place opened in 2008, and much more is planned for 2009: a luxurious Renaissance Hotel and Spa, and a new outpatient health care facility run by two of Boston's best hospitals, Brigham and Women's and Mass General.

South Africa's FIFA World Cup 2010

The tension is reaching the breaking point as South Africa prepares to host the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The stadiums are completed and already have hosted pre-cup games. Major upgrades in the hospitality and transport sectors have come on line, the Rainbow Nation is ready, and South Africa will continue to benefit long after the last ball has been kicked and the final match has been played.

This will be the first time that the prestigious international event takes place on African soil. Why this is, is an open question, given the fact that South Africa has successfully hosted both the 1997 World Rugby Cup and the 2003 World Cricket Cup, not to mention the presence of internationally competitive African teams like Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Cameroon, all of whom have a good chance of taking home the FIFA trophy.

While South Africa's hopes of reaching the finals are not considered the best, the nature of soccer cup competitions, and especially the FIFA World Cup, is that any team can win, and indeed, if the host country does take gold then it will not be the first dark horse to do so. Although many of the matches are scheduled to be played in the urban hubs of Cape Town, Durban and the Soweto / Johannesburg / Pretoria Metropolis, South Africa has ensured a wider spread of benefits by establishing ten stadiums across the country. All meet FIFA standards in terms of safety, team, and crowd comforts, and all compare with any other soccer stadium anywhere else in the world:

  • The three most high profile stadiums are Johannesburg (Soccer City, 88,000 seats), Johannesburg (Ellis Park Stadium, 61,000 seats), and Tshwane / Pretoria (Loftus Versveld Stadium, 49,000 seats). These three stadiums in South Africa's central urban Metropolis will host three rounds of sixteen, two quarter finals, and the all-important final game at Soccer City in Soweto. In moments between exciting matches, international soccer fans will have the opportunity to experience vibrant African city life and the game reserves that lie beyond.
  • The three soccer venues on South Africa's southern and western coastal strip - Cape Town (Green Point Stadium, 66,000 seats), Durban (Durban Stadium, 69,000 seats), and Nelson Mandela Bay / Port Elizabeth (Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, 46,000 seats) - although not benefiting from the final game, will nevertheless host three rounds of sixteen, two quarter finals, and two semi final matches. Beyond these soccer stadiums, tourist destinations like the Cape Winelands, Addo Elephant Park, and the stunning Drakensberg Mountains await, where match celebrations or commiserations may be held.
  • The remaining four Stadiums - Mangaung / Bloemfontein (Free State Stadium, 45,000 seats), Rustenburg (Royal Bafokeng Stadium, 44,000 seats), Nelspruit (Mbombela Stadium, 43,000 seats), and Polokwane (Peter Mokaba Stadium, 45,000 seats) - all have much more to offer than just two rounds of sixteen between them. They are located near conservation areas such as Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the legendary Rustenburg protected areas, the Blyde River Canyon, and surrounding areas of exceptional natural beauty, not to mention the teeming herds of game in Kruger National Park.

South Africa's FIFA World Cup 2010 is a whole lot more than the world's greatest Soccer Tournament ever. Please visit, it is happening here, and we welcome you to our land. Come to Cape Town and all other locations of the 2010 World Cup.

Venture Capital Investments in Sports and Entertainment

The venture capital funding world has entered a new sector - this is the always changing sector of Sports and Entertainment. Investments in the entertainment world have been around for a few years already, like the enormous $100 Million investment in the Da Vinci Code film in 2005. And (in a humoristic way) if we remember the book "The Godfather", also there we can find an "investment" in the famous singer Johnny Fontane, a godson of Corleone's, who has come from Hollywood to ask the Godfather's help in getting a movie role that will revitalize his flagging career. Jack Woltz, the head of the studio, will not give Fontane the part, but Don Corleone (The Godfather) explains to Johnny: "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."
the calculation for what the return is from an investment in a film includes the factor that a studio naturally gets the proceeds from approximately half the tickets sold at the USA box office, and the overall take from the box office is roughly one-third of the money a studio earns after a film has gone to play overseas and becomes a DVD or movie on pay TV.

The new sector of sports investments is receiving millions of dollars. Recent investments in sports goods producers and distributors include an investment of $68 Million committed by Allied Capital Corporation to support the buyout of Augusta Sportswear Group by private equity firm Quad-C Management. Augusta was founded in 1977, and is among the largest suppliers of blank athletic uniforms in the U.S. The company sells over 52,000 SKUs of team uniforms, athletic apparel, outerwear and school-inspired products to over 40,000 customers, consisting of uniform suppliers, custom decorators and promotional products distributors.

Another recent investment is of $2 Million in Golf Club Maker Nickent in Equity Investment. "We are pleased to announce this investment in Nickent," commented Anthony Moore, Co-Chairman and President of Equus and Chairman of Nickent. "This, combined with our debt financing in June, positions the Fund to receive dual benefits of current income and potential capital gains. We look forward to working with Nickent and its experienced management team."

Nickent is a market leader in the rapidly expanding, hybrid club segment of the golf industry and is an emerging leader in game-enhancement technology.

All these investments are happening now. One last example is Seatwave. Seatwave, Europe's largest fan-to-fan ticket exchange, is an online marketplace for buying and selling tickets for theatre, sports, music and other live events. Seatwave recently announced it has raised $25 million in Series C funding led by Fidelity Ventures. Fidelity Ventures is joined by existing investors Atlas Venture, Mangrove Capital Partners and Adinvest. Seatwave was launched in 2007 and has more than 500,000 tickets on sale at any given time, 25 times more than eBay.
